Exercise: “Fling Fling” by Major (Retd) Mike Ross MBE

The Lads of 116 (AMPH) Coy, 18 (AMPH) Company RASC and 18 (AMPH) Squadron RCT held its “Final Fling” reunion over the weekend 15th – 17th October 2010. The lads were able to drive the DUKW’s (Amphibious ducks) in the water at Instow with the kind permission of the Officer Commanding, Major Sreve Congrieze R.M. During the visit to Instow we were assisted throughout by Sgt Andy Middleton R.M. May I thank you both for a great visit and also thanks to all the Marines who also assisted. Fremington Camp has been sold, however we did manage to walk down memory lane on the Saturday afternoon. It did bring back memories to us all. We talked of the Lynton and Lynmouth floods; the Exeter floods all of which happened during the sixties when the unit was involved in the recovery of people and live stock at all three locations.

Our raffle raised £863 pounds for the Little Bridge House hospice at Fremington. There were 167 for dinner on the Saturday night with music from the sixties and seventies to dance too. The Barnstaple Hotel looked after us extremely well and all rooms were taken for this reunion. Our members came from Tasmania, Weston Australia, Spain, Northern Ireland, Isle of Bute and all over the United Kingdom.

The golf at Portmore Golf Club was won by Pat Scully of the WKSP and my thanks to Bob McManus for all the arrangements.

May I take this opportunity to thank all the DUKW Lads for their support at the dinner and the charity which we have supported for our last two reunions. Stay well you DUKW Lads.
